Duties:

Analyses methods include, but are not limited to,   Gas Chromatography Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS), X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FT-IR), Polarized Light Microscopy (PLM), and Raman Spectroscopy.
  • Provide guidance in his/her forensic science specialty area to the military judicial system or intelligence components in theater.
  • Examine evidence, including Improvised Explosive Device (IED) components and post blast fragments, for explosives residues using any and all means available, including those methods described above.
  • Attempt in all cases to identify both the composition of explosive present and obtain as much information as possible regarding the possible sources of explosive compositions.
  • Document examination results/findings in a standard report using established EFD templates. Report all findings even if there were no indications of the presence of explosives or explosives residues. Electronic copies of all reports shall be provided to the Government.
  • Ensure that an electronic back-up copy of all new or draft reports is made before the end of each work day.

Requirements:

 

Contractor(s) shall meet GS 1320 Chemist (grades 7, 9, or 11) requirements, and, in addition:

  • Show successful completion of a full four year college course of study at an accredited college or university leading to a Bachelors or higher degree in chemistry, physical sciences, life sciences, or engineering that included 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by course work in mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics. OR Combination of education and experience--course work equivalent to a major as shown above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. Have at least one year of laboratory experience performing instrumental analyses.
  • Have been trained in proper collection, preservation, and packaging of physical evidence at major crime scenes. 
  • Be able to meet government background/personnel security requirements and be able to maintain those requirements.
  • Successfully complete pre-deployment training and fitness requirements specified by the Department of Defense for working overseas.
  • Successfully pass specialized training offered by the USACIL and examinations, competency and proficiency tests prepared by the USACIL.
